Guidelines for Awards

Outstanding Plant Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Plant Award is to encourage all wastewater treatment facilities in the State of Utah to strive for optimum operation of their facilities and to encourage cities and districts to support the facilities. There are four categories of awards, Mechanical Plants over, under 5 MGD flow design capacity, Lagoon System discharging or non-discharging

Outstanding Operator Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Operator Award is to recognize the contributions made by an operator of outstanding ability. This person should exemplify all the positive traits of an operator. There are two size categories of the Outstanding Operator awards for plants 5 MGD design or under 5 MGD design. Any operator of a wastewater treatment plant, regardless of his/her status within the Association, is eligible for the Outstanding Operator Award. Those who have significant supervisory responsibilities are ineligible for the award. It is not considered to be proper to nominate one's self for a personal award. Nominations should be made by someone other than the nominee and verified with nominees supervisor's signature on the nomination form. This award is considered a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Outstanding Maintenance Specialist Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Maintenance Specialist Award is to recognize contributions and/or accomplishments of maintenance personnel of outstanding ability. Any personnel in the area of maintenance of a water reclamation facility or collection system, which would include, mechanics, electricians, etc., regardless of his/her status within the Association, are eligible for this award. It is not considered to be proper to nominate one's self for a personal award. Nominations should be made by someone other than the nominee and verified with nominees supervisor's signature on the nomination form. This award is considered to be a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Best Pretreatment Program Award

The purpose of the Best Pretreatment Program Award is to encourage all wastewater systems in the State of Utah with an approved pretreatment program to strive for optimum operation of their program and to encourage industries to support the facilities.

Outstanding Pretreatment Specialist Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Pretreatment Specialist Award is to recognize those individuals who help to operate and maintain their pretreatment programs in a professional, efficient manner, and who has demonstrated his/her willingness to perform beyond minimum job requirements. There is only one award given.
Any individual working in an approved pretreatment program, regardless of their status within the Association, is eligible for the award. Nominees would include technicians and not coordinators, however in the area where the coordinator is the only one in the organization then they are eligible for this award and miscellaneous points will be used to level the playing field, otherwise coordinators with employees under them will be eligible for the supervisor award. This award is considered a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Outstanding Collection System Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Collection System Award is to promote professional developments, maintenance, and management of wastewater collection systems, as well as to acknowledge the entity that best exemplifies professional organization, planning, and operational programs in overall operation of its collection system. There are two categories of awards, systems with over or under 5 MGD flows.

Any wastewater collection system is eligible for the award. In keeping with the objective of the award, any system which has won the award the previous two years is ineligible to win the award in the next year.

Outstanding Collection System Operator Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Collection System Operator Award is to recognize those operators who help to operate and maintain their system in a professional, efficient manner, and have demonstrated his/her willingness to perform beyond minimum job requirements. There are two categories for this award, systems with over or under 5 MGD flows

Any operator of a wastewater collection system, regardless of their status within the Association, is eligible for the award. This award is considered a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Best Operated Laboratory Award

The purpose of the Best Operated Laboratory Award is to encourage all wastewater treatment facilities in the state of Utah to strive for optimum operation of their facilities and to encourage cities and districts to support the facilities. The award is to be evaluated and awarded based on how well they do what they do, or their scope of work, and not how much they do, or plant compliance monitoring. There is only one award given.

Any laboratory which tests primarily municipal wastewater and which is located on a plant site is eligible for the award. In keeping with the objective, any laboratory which has won the award the previous two years is ineligible to win the award in the next year

Outstanding Laboratory Technician Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Laboratory Technician Award is to recognize the contributions made by a laboratory technician of outstanding ability. There is only one award given.

Any laboratory technician of a municipal plant, regardless of his status within the association, is eligible for the award. Those who have significant supervisory responsibilities within the association are ineligible for the award. Nominees would include technicians and not directors, however in the area where the director is the only one in the organization then they are eligible for this award and miscellaneous points will be used to level the playing field, otherwise directors with employees under them will be eligible for the supervisor award. This award is considered a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Safety Award

The purpose of the Safety Award is to encourage all wastewater treatment facilities, collection systems, and pretreatment programs in the State of Utah to recognize the effort and contributions made by all personnel to maintain excellent safe working conditions, and be safety minded and informed at all times. There is only one award:

Any wastewater treatment plant, collection system, or pretreatment program is eligible for the award. In keeping with the objective, any plant which has won the award the previous two years is ineligible to win the award in the next year.

Outstanding Supervisors

The objective of the Outstanding Supervisors award is to recognize outstanding contribution made by individuals functioning in the wastewater field at the management level with significant supervisory responsibilities. There is only one award given.

Any individual in a supervisory capacity of a wastewater treatment plant, collection system or pretreatment program, regardless of his status within the organization, i.e., supervisors, department heads, etc. are eligible for the award. Facility Managers, Public Works Directors, and above, within their programs are ineligible for the award. This award is considered a one-in-a-lifetime honor.

Outstanding Biosolids Program Award

The purpose of the Outstanding Biosolids Program Award is to recognize the outstanding biosolids program and to encourage all biosolids production facilities in the State of Utah with a current 503 permit to strive for optimum operation of their program, to promote the beneficial use of biosolids, and to encourage cities and districts to support the facilities. There is one category for this award.
Any facility that produces biosolids (as defined by EPA) in their process, under a current 503 permit, is eligible for the award. In keeping with the objective, any program which has won the award the previous two years is ineligible to win the award in the next year.

Outstanding Young Professional Award

The objective of the Outstanding Young Professional Award is to recognize the contributions of young water environment professionals for significant contributions to the Water Environment Association of Utah and to the wastewater collection and treatment industry.

Nominees must be 35 years old or younger at the time of nomination. Demonstrated contributions to enhancing the activities of the Water Environment Association of Utah, contributions to WEAU Member Associations and to WEAU Committees and improvement in the fundamental knowledge of performance of wastewater collection and treatment systems, water resource protection and research on issues important to the water environment.
